Black Cat Artspace

I worked with the owner to create a logo for Dundas West art gallery The Black Cat. The gallery is a storefront that still has the original hand painted signage for Black Cat Cigarettes from the 1950s. That was unknown and hidden by ugly paneling until the owner renovated and took it down, revealing the beautiful old glass and signage. The gallery was renamed to honour the space's history - before it was known simply by its address - so I included this history in the design. I used the original hand painted lettering in the wordmark itself, and imitated the glass panels for the form. "Black Cat" is a common name which was a concern, but we decided that embracing and highlighting the story behind the name and little bit of Toronto history would make the identity unique.
